Southeast Mississippi Band Directors' Association

Dear SEMBDA Members,

I hope your school year has been successful so far.  I’m looking forward to the 2017 SEMBDA Honor Band Clinic, and working with each of you.  I’m very excited about our lineup of clinicians.  The clinic auditions will be Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Jones County Junior College.  This band clinic itself will be Friday and Saturday, January 27-28, 2017, at Jones County Junior College.

Our Gold Band clinician will be Dr. Ken Bodiford, director of bands at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, as well as the current director of the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.  Dr. Bodiford was also executive director of the Spirit of JSU drum and bugle corps from 2001-2007.

Our Silver Band clinician will be Mr. Reuben McDowell, assistant band director at Pearl River Community College, and previous director of bands at Columbia High School.  Our Bronze Band clinician will be Ms. Kim Bain, director of bands at Louis Pizitz Middle School in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.  And our Red Band clinician will be Mrs. Aimee Sudduth, assistant band director at Pearl High School.

We will also have two great band director clinics on the Friday night of SEMBDA clinic, January 27th.  These two clinics will last approximately one hour each.  Dr. Timothy Tesh, trumpet professor at USM, and Dr. Mark Waymire, Music Education professor at USM, will be our two presenters.  I know they will both give wonderful clinics that will benefit us all as music educators.  Please make plans to attend these two director clinics.

Please note that all members of SEMBDA are required to be involved in the audition process on January 5th.  We will also need additional help in our audition assignments, whether it be judging or monitoring.  If you know of anyone in the area who might be willing to help out with this, please let me know.  If you have student teachers this semester, please talk to them about possibly helping judge auditions as well.

Thank you for all that you do.  I look forward to making this a great SEMBDA clinic experience for both the students and directors.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kody Killens

Dear SEMBDA Members,

It has been an honor to serve on the Executive Board for the last four years. We have

an incredible group of hard working and caring band directors that make this a great

organization. This years auditions and clinic would not have been possible without

Chris Word, Kody Killens, Zach Hassell, Mandi Dickens, and William Garner. These

individuals care about our students, our district, and our profession. I am excited to see

the growth of our organization in their hands. Thank you to all of the members of the

association for being so willing to do the things necessary to provide opportunities to

our students.

If you missed the clinic you missed out on some great directors working with our

students an outstanding concert, and some wonderful director clinics given by Lindsey

Keay and Jeff Brown.

I would like to welcome Zach Langley from Northeast Jones to the executive board as

3rd Vice President. He will be a great addition to the executive board.

Finally, I would like to remind you to watch for an email concerning the Pre-Fest. Thank

you again for the opportunity to serve you and our students.

Respectfully,

Nicole Allen

Dear members of SEMBDA,

I would like to personally thank Nicole Allen for all of her hard work and dedication with

SEMBDA over the past several years, especially serving as president this year. I have

enjoyed working alongside her, both as a colleague and a friend. This year’s clinic was

a great success, in large part to all of her hard work.

I am very thankful to the rest of the executive board for all of their hard work and efforts

as well. You helped make this year’s clinic fun and educational for all students involved.

I’m excited about working with all of you again next year.

I also want to thank the JCJC staff for their contributions and efforts. We could not do

our clinic without them. They are the “unsung heroes” of our organization, because

they put in a lot of work for our clinic that is behind the scenes.

Lastly, I am very much looking forward to serving as President of SEMBDA next year. I

hope to continue in the success that has been carried through our executive board for

many years now. Please call or email me if you have any ideas or concerns for next

year’s clinic. My desire for our clinic is for every student to have a great educational

experience that they can carry back into their band program at home.
